Mozambique and Haiti are two breathtakingly beautiful countries, rich in culture, resilience, and spirit. Both have faced unimaginable hardship over the years, but none more devastating than the natural disasters that ripped through their communities. In 2021, Haiti was brought to its knees by a powerful earthquake that tore families apart, leveled homes, and destroyed the dreams of countless children. In 2023, Mozambique was battered by a fierce cyclone, leaving a trail of destruction that wiped out villages, schools, and safe havens.
These aren’t just faraway places—these are homes, playgrounds, and classrooms where children, no different from our own, laughed, played, and dared to dream.
The reality after these disasters was nothing short of tragic. Families were torn apart, and children who once knew safety and security were left homeless and heartbroken. Schools—often the only beacon of hope in these communities—were reduced to rubble. Suddenly, the future for thousands of children seemed uncertain.
But we refused to let that be the end of their story.
Since the earthquake in Haiti and the cyclone in Mozambique, our foundation has been on the ground, rebuilding what was lost. We’ve restored schools, constructed homes, and revived community centers, giving over 700 children and their families the chance to rise again. These children were displaced, their lives interrupted in unimaginable ways, but through our disaster recovery and rebuilding efforts, we are providing them with the one thing they need most: hope.
Mozambique
Mozambique, with its pristine beaches and rich cultural history, is a place where the beauty of the land reflects the strength of its people. Despite facing natural disasters like the 2023 cyclone, the communities of Mozambique have shown an unbreakable spirit. Families, already battling poverty, were suddenly left without homes, without schools, and without the basic necessities that many of us take for granted. The storm shattered everything in its path—but not the will of the people.
In the face of unimaginable destruction, we stood by their side. We rebuilt entire communities from the ground up, brick by brick, ensuring children would not have to sacrifice their futures. Schools were rebuilt, not as mere structures, but as sanctuaries—places where children could once again learn, dream, and envision a brighter tomorrow.
Haiti
Haiti, a nation known for its vibrant culture and tenacious spirit, was already grappling with economic hardships when the 2021 earthquake struck. Entire towns were flattened, and thousands of families were displaced. In the blink of an eye, children lost everything they knew—their homes, their schools, and for many, their sense of security.
But we didn’t turn away.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, we worked tirelessly to rebuild over 150 homes and schools, creating safe spaces where children could once again learn, grow, and thrive. For children like Marie, a 10-year-old girl whose school was destroyed, this meant the world. She shared with us, “I want to be a teacher now, so I can help others like you helped me.”
Marie’s story is just one of hundreds—hundreds of lives we’ve touched, hundreds of futures we’ve saved.
The Importance of Education in Crisis
One of the most heartbreaking consequences of these natural disasters is the disruption of education. In places like Haiti and Mozambique, where education already faces significant barriers, disasters make it even harder for children to access the learning opportunities they deserve. Without education, these children risk being trapped in a cycle of poverty that spans generations.
Our foundation believes that education is the key to breaking this cycle. That’s why, in the wake of these disasters, we’ve made rebuilding schools and community centers a priority. Children who lost everything are now returning to school, not just to learn, but to reclaim a sense of normalcy in their lives.
We’ve given these children a safe space where they can escape the chaos around them, even if just for a few hours a day. The smile of a child as they walk into their classroom for the first time since the disaster is priceless—and that’s why we do what we do.
Rebuilding Homes: Restoring Hope and Stability
Beyond schools, the loss of homes has left thousands of families without shelter. A roof over their heads means safety, dignity, and the foundation for a future. For families like the Maduros in Mozambique, losing their home meant more than just the loss of a structure. It meant the loss of their security, their memories, and their comfort.
We knew we had to do more than just rebuild houses. We had to rebuild hope.
Today, over 200 homes have been rebuilt, each one stronger and safer than before. These homes are not just shelters—they are places where families can begin to heal and children can start to dream again. The Maduro family now has a new, sturdy house where their children can sleep soundly at night. “We are safe now,” Mrs. Maduro told us, her eyes filled with gratitude. “We have hope again.”
