Safe Water and Sanitation Projects: Changing Lives in Ethiopia and Tanzania

Ethiopia and Tanzania: Countries of Deep History and Resilience

East Africa is a region of immense beauty and rich cultural diversity, yet beneath this vibrancy lies an ongoing struggle for the basics – safe water and sanitation. In countries like Ethiopia and Tanzania, access to clean water can mean the difference between life and death. Here, in villages nestled between vast landscapes, we have worked tirelessly to alleviate the devastating water crisis, transforming lives with the simple, yet profound gift of clean water.

Ethiopia and Tanzania are home to some of the most resilient communities on the African continent. From the bustling markets of Addis Ababa to the sweeping plains of the Serengeti, the culture is vibrant and full of life. But in these same communities, particularly in rural areas, thousands of people live without consistent access to safe drinking water. Children, who should be in school chasing their dreams, instead spend hours each day walking treacherous paths to fetch contaminated water from rivers and ponds. This water, filled with dangerous bacteria, is often the source of deadly waterborne diseases that claim innocent lives, particularly those of children under the age of five.

Challenge: The Crisis of Waterborne Diseases

Lack of clean water is more than just an inconvenience—it is a crisis that shapes the future of entire communities. In Ethiopia, for example, only 57% of the population has access to clean drinking water, while in Tanzania, this figure hovers around 61%. Imagine the daily life of a child living in these conditions. Every morning, before the sun rises, young girls as young as 7 years old begin a long, gruelling walk. Carrying heavy jerry cans on their tiny frames, they trek for miles across rugged terrain to gather water. Often, the water they return with is murky, contaminated with parasites, and brimming with health risks. Diarrheal diseases are rampant, leading to hundreds of thousands of deaths each year—deaths that could be prevented with access to clean, safe water.

The impact of this reality is staggering: girls lose their chance at education, communities are plagued by preventable diseases, and the cycle of poverty continues.

Our Solution

In response to this heartbreaking need, Oscar Acts Charity launched an ambitious Water and Sanitation Program. Through this initiative, we have installed 42 clean water wells in Ethiopia and Tanzania, directly benefiting over 10,000 people. Each well serves as a lifeline, delivering clean, safe drinking water to entire villages.

The wells are more than just infrastructure—they represent hope, health, and opportunity. Every drop of water that flows from these wells brings with it the promise of a healthier, brighter future. Children are freed from the daily burden of water collection, allowing them to return to school and chase their dreams. Families no longer have to worry about the spread of diseases like cholera and dysentery.

In the small village of Sodo, Ethiopia, a mother of three daughters, Ayana, shared her story with us. “Before the well, my children were always sick,” she said. “I had no money for doctors, no way to protect them. Now, with clean water just a few steps away, my daughters are healthy. They go to school every day. My heart is full.”

These wells have done more than save lives—they’ve given back childhoods, restored dignity, and allowed entire communities to dream again.

Results So Far

Since the inception of our Water and Sanitation Projects, the transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. With clean water flowing through these communities, we’ve seen:

  • A drastic reduction in waterborne diseases.
  • Increased school attendance, especially for girls, now free from the task of fetching water.
  • Healthier communities, where families are empowered to thrive instead of just survive.

In some villages, the number of waterborne disease cases has decreased by over 50%, thanks to the installation of our wells. Children who were once forced to drop out of school due to illness are now top of their class. Families who once lived in fear of the next sickness now plan for a future where health and prosperity are within reach.

The Ripple Effect: More Than Just Water

Access to safe water is the foundation for so much more than health—it’s about building stronger, more resilient communities. When clean water flows, everything changes. Children can attend school, women can start businesses, and entire families can break free from the cycle of poverty.

At Oscar Acts Charity, our commitment goes beyond just installing wells. We work hand-in-hand with local communities, ensuring that they have the tools and training to maintain these wells long into the future. We also promote hygiene education, teaching families how to keep themselves and their environment clean and safe. This comprehensive approach ensures that the impact of our water projects is not just felt today, but for generations to come.
